About Me

Hi there! Allow me to introduce myself...

My name is Rachel Ramirez

Thank you for taking notice in my artwork I hope that my page will help introduce myself to you a little bit.  I have my bachelor’s in fine arts and an EC-12 Art Certification. I have 20+years experience in painting but I have been making art my entire life! And needless to say, art is my life. (Oh yeah, and of course my husband and my kids...wink)

WHERE I COME FROM AND WHY I DO IT

I live in a little corner of West Texas called Midland....It's hot, its flat, and there is a whole bunch of nothing, but man it's got the most beautiful skies! Because of its vastness the skies go on as far as the eye can see! And in this beautiful vastness I live here with my husband and three kids. A teenager and twin toddlers.... all boys, yikes! How do I make time for art? Honestly, I don't know?! It’s just something that I must carve time out for, like sleeping and eating or watching Netflix. It’s just a necessity and I must do it. Whether if it’s just for me, my kids, my students or for a stranger It’s a beautiful thing because something that I created, an idea that was once in my head, is now tangible and people can see it, feel it, have conversations and opinions about it. An idea that was once lingering in my head someone can have a connection to it, and it can become theirs to enjoy and have conversations and opinions about with other people. That’s why I do it for the connection.

 My Work

The portraits I paint represent, of course, a part of me, but mainly what they represent is where I'm from and the rough desert splendor that surrounds this area. I choose cacti a lot in my work for their resilience. And I turn it into a crown sort of as a symbol of nobility and a rite of passage. I think anything that can survive in the desert is resilient, whether it's the plants, the animals, the people. I find inspiration in the things around me and my environment. My perception of where I’m from is rough, rugged, and vast. The winds blow hot and the ground beneath your feet is even hotter. But there is some unique beauty here that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. The desert can be unforgiving but at the same time her beauty is without a doubt evident as far as the eye can see. It goes on forever. From the endless sunsets to the majestic night skies. The desert is where I'm from and it's what I know.

My Surfaces

A part of my painting process is what I choose to paint on. Which is canvas and mainly wood surfaces. I choose birch plywood panels that I buy from my local hardware store, and I sand them, cut them, and frame them myself. I love working on this wood, and I love the way the grain of the wood looks with the images I paint on them. I like to see the raw wood show through as part of the color scheme in some of my pieces. I think it gives the pieces a quaint and more rustic look contrasting with contemporary and surreal themes
