“Windmill City” is what Midland, TX was called back in the beginning of the 20th century. Windmills were crucial to survival in a land with virtually no surface water, these windmills required adaptation to withstand the harsh West Texas winds. As the farming movement grew and many came seeking cheap land it brought with it along some imperilments and setbacks. Smallpox, flu, epidemics, severe drought, and economic depression were just a few of the events that farmers and pioneers had to endure. I could only imagine what life was like for a woman trying to raise children in these early days in Windmill City. In a land that was predominantly male I see women having to stand their ground many times for survival and the safety for their children.
